The chair of landscape economics

The Chair in Landscape Economics, held by Prof. Dr. Volkmar Hartje is part of the Institute for Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning in the Planning School of the TU Berlin. The mission of the Chair in Landscape Economics is to analyse the economic dimensions of nature conservation, biodiversity protection, water resource management and the land use dimensions of climate change in research and education. It develops and applies economic tools for environmental valuation and applies institutional analytical approaches to environmental policy.

The Chair is actively involved in the education of PhD, Master and Bachelor students in environmental planning and water management. The courses taught concentrate on environmental economic courses required for the different Bachelor- and Master programmes of the Planning School of the University of Technology Berlin.

The aim of our research is to support the sustainable use and management of natural resources and to further develop methods for the valuation of environmental goods and biodiversity. Results of our research are frequently published in international scientific journals and presented at national and international conferences.

Research at the Chair is strategically focused on five thematic research areas:

  • Economic Valuation of Environmental Goods
  • Governance, Institutions and Instruments
  • Water Resource Management
  • Biodiversity, Nature Protection and Ecosystem Services
  • Recreation and Urban Green
